Ben Benedict plays inventive solos and rock-solid rhythm on acoustic guitar and mandolin, and provides heart-felt lead and harmony vocals. His original songs are full of life and spirit, and he performs a wealth of standards and lesser-known gems in a bluegrass style influenced by country-rock, western swing, and jazz. He's also got an easy-going and quick wit, so live shows with the Ben Benedict Band are filled with fun and surprise.
but what does he sound like?
Crazy Heart
We had excellent sound at the 2021 American Music Festival in Three Oaks, MI, but when the system cut out toward the end of our set, we just stepped into the audience and played with no mics to give them a chance to fix it. Our friend Dan was kind enough to take a video. Nice knee, Dan!

Honky Tonk Happy Hour
Here’s one of Ben’s original songs, recorded at a casual jam session during the pandemic. The South Bend Civic Theater lent us their large and well-ventilated stage for a safe get-together right when we thought we were going to lose our minds from lack of playing time.

Another video from the South Bend Civic Theatre sessions, with Ben displaying his mandolin skills and singing harmony on a sweet Civil War song recorded originally by the Amazing Rhythm Aces.

Ben Benedict has been playing bluegrass since his father put a mandolin in his hands at the ripe old age of four. He has toured both regionally and nationally as a member of top Chicago bands the Henhouse Prowlers and Dog 1. Now based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Ben performs in clubs and festivals throughout the country, with his own band or sitting in with a variety of groups.
His original song “Simplify," as performed by the Henhouse Prowlers, won the 2010 International Acoustic Music Awards Bluegrass/Country song of the year. The song can also be heard on the popular video game Watchdogs, released in 2014. Ben's original piece "Newsome Ridge" is the theme song for the PBS mini-series The Ride of Our Lives, written, produced, and recorded by NBC Today Show correspondent Mike Leonard.
Ben's songs are a reflection of his journey from a childhood in rural Missouri to working in the corporate boardrooms of Chicago, and now, onward to even bigger hopes and dreams. He tells stories we can all relate to. Regardless of where we're from, where we are now, or where we're going, we all share the human condition: doing the best we can on this sojourn called life.
